Wholesale Switching
Wholesale definition is "to sell (something) in quantity usually for resale". In the case of VoIP a wholesaler acts as a traffic aggregator and exchanger for their customer. Because of the volume of the traffic a wholesaler buys, he obtains much better prices than normal retailers. They sign up contracts with both retail and wholesale VoIP providers and act as middle men for call origination and termination services. When traffic is sent to a wholesale provider, the wholesaler reroutes it to a partner carrier for termination and makes profit from the price difference.
As businesses of Service Providers evolve their networks over time from TDM-IP to IP-IP, the challenges of transcoding become real.
VoIP transcoding is the process of converting from one voice coding algorithm to another, in most of the cases from a G.723.1 or G.729a to G.711 algorithm. VoIP transcoding is very resource intensive and must be done in real time with little or no delay. Topex offers a comprehensive set of solution to all kinds of operator for transcoding deployments.
Carrier1 is a VoIP wholesaler. Carrier1 has contractual agreements regarding price/minute with Carrier2, Carrier3 and Carrier4. Carrier1 receives VoIP traffic via External IP network for traffic termination. Carrier1 softswitch reroutes the traffic using Least Cost Routing algorithms to corresponding carrier (in the above example Carrier2 or Carrier3 or Carrier4). Carrier1 softswitch records the call in its billing engine or Call Detail Record entries.
